Denan, Ethiopia: On the Border of Somalia
Posted by vagoscribe under Ethiopia | Tags: Denan, desert, Ethiopia, Ogaden, photography, Photos, Somalia, travel |Leave a Comment
Denan is within the current borders of Ethiopia, in the southeast of the country, close to Somalia. I spent a few days there working on a project, documenting the cooking practices of some households in the town. The welcoming we received at each house we visited was warm, sometimes including an offering of food in a village where little existed.
I’ll never forget that Ogaden moon shining high over Denan during those nights, and I still hold on to the hope that the future of the Ogaden will be brighter than it is today.

I first wrote about the wells near Shinile back in 2005: http://vagoscribe.com/2008/02/29/shinile-40-wells-and-thousands-of-camels/ 40 Wells and Thousands of Camels. It seems that a fair amount of people search the interwebs looking for pictures of Somali camels. Here are some more for those searchers.
It’s been a while since I’ve looked at the following photos. Lots of thoughts enter my mind regarding Somalia, the Somali people, the wars, borders, Ethiopia, history in the Horn of Africa. I think it’s time for me to read some more Nuruddin Farah.
