Costa Rica

Winter has sat its big arse down on the Midwest, and I’ve sat mine on the couch with little-to-no motivation for piling on layers of clothes to bike in the sub-freezing temps.

If you’re ever up by Liberia, Costa Rica, near the Nicaraguan border, and have a hankering to get a ride in, look up Guanabikers.  They will satisfy any mtb need you may have.   This refreshing spot can be accessed through them.  Take note:  if you clean the rock garden on the approach to the waterfall, you are an elite technical rider!

For the past two years, a team of us has worked with an organic coffee growers association in the volcanic hills around Turrialba, Costa Rica (home to this year’s stage 2 end/stage 3 beginning of La Ruta de los Conquistadores) in improving the organizational and business capacity of the group, resulting in a new organizational structure and business plan.
When I had down time, I borrowed a colleague’s dated mtb to unwind a little.  In Issue 7 of Switchback (a breath of fresh air mtb magazine that came out a year ago), I tell the story of Turri coffee and mtb, highlighting the climb up to the cone zone of the Turrialba Volcano.  Now on Barnes and Nobles newsstands, and available digitally online, check it out!
